Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Successful weight loss is an exciting achievement. Excess weight, however, is composed of more than just fatty deposits. When the excess fat has been lost, often times there is remaining underlying tissue that was previously used to support the fat deposits, as well as excess skin. Especially for older persons, the remaining excess skin has lost elasticity and appears loose or saggy. Body Contouring is a procedure used to alter the remaining underlying tissue, remove any additional undesired fat deposits, and remove excess skin to give a firm, healthy, and youthful contour to your body. It is the final step of successfully losing large amounts of weight.

Who’s a Candidate?

The most viable candidates are persons who have excess skin, underlying tissue, and undesired fatty deposits after successful and stabilized weight loss. It very is important that candidates for body contouring to be committed to living a healthy and active lifestyle after the procedure. If you are unsure about your commitment to a healthy lifestyle, discuss with Dr. Paydar what options are available to you. Smokers and individuals with medical conditions that may impede the healing process of this operation may not qualify to receive the body contouring procedure.

The Surgery

Anesthesia will be administered to reduce the pain of incisions made on the body during the operation. Every patient is unique and every procedure within the body contouring operation is unique to the patient’s needs. Dr. Paydar will determine the areas of the abdomen, buttocks, groin, thighs, breasts, and arms that need treatment. The excess skin, tissue, and fat deposits in these areas will then be removed through the incisions. All skin will then be pulled tight to match the new shape and size of your body. Each incision will be properly sutured and dressed.

After Your Surgery

It is normal to experience soreness and swelling at incision and operation sites on your body. You may be given a compression garment to help reduce swelling and improve the healing process. The final shape of your contouring procedure may not be completely visible till all swelling subsides and skin coloration returns to normal.

It is important that you have reached and maintained a stable body weight prior to the procedure. If you continue to lose weight after the body contouring, you may develop pockets of sagging skin. Similarly, if you gain a large amount of weight after the procedure, you may develop stretch marks and scars from stretching your already weakened and thinned skin. Continue your commitment to living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a stable weight upon completion of this procedure to maintain optimal results.
