Breast Lift

What is a Breast Lift?

Mastopexy is a procedure where breasts are lifted. This procedure is done to reposition breast tissue and nipples to more appropriate location on the chest wall. Also there will be improvement in breast shape along with more fullness over the superior part of the breasts. Best candidates are women who are looking for improvement and not necessarily perfection. You should be physically healthy and realistic in your expectations.

Who is a Breast Lift Candidate?

Breast augmentation surgically enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breast. This procedure may be done to enhance the body contour of a woman who feels her breast size is too small, to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy, or to balance a difference in breast size.

Now playing on the words, can you get a breast lift from augmentation? Yes and No. It depends on the severity of the ptosis or “droopiness” of the breast to begin with. Moderate to severe cases of ptosis will require breast lift as well as augmentation to reposition the breast tissue and nipple over the implant.

How do I prepare for my Breast Lift?

Mastopexy is usually performed at outpatient centers. Patients can expect general anesthesia to be used in addition to local anesthesia. It has less pain when compared to breast augmentation since no muscle is detached during the procedure.
This procedure takes between 2.5 to 4 hours, and patients should arrange to have someone drive them home after the procedure.

What happens during a Breast Lift?

Mastopexy with augmentation can be done as an outpatient procedure, using either general anesthesia or IV sedation. The method of inserting your implants will be through the nipple areola or vertical incision as similar incisions will be required to lift the breast as well. A full lift can result in a lollipop type or an anchor-shaped scar that fades over time and is hidden on the lower aspect of the breast. The surgery usually takes 2 to 3 hours to complete.

What is the Breast Lift Recovery Process?

While you’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days after your surgery, you should be up and around within 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by doctor-prescribed pain medication.

What are the Risks of a Breast Lift?

Besides the most common problem of capsular contracture (hardening of the capsule), implant infection which is most often seen within a week after surgery. In some cases, the implant may need to be removed for several months until the infection clears. A new implant then can be inserted.
Occasionally, breast implants break or leak may. Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either silicone gel or a salt water solution (saline). Rupture can occur as the result of injury or even from the normal compression and movement of your breast, causing the man-made shell to leak. If a saline-filled implant breaks, the implant will deflate in a few hours, and the body will harmlessly absorb the salt water. More recent anatomically shaped silicone implants have higher silicone cross linking, giving them the “gummy” texture where the silicone stays put if rupture were to occur.
