Tummy Tuck

Life can, unfortunately, take a significant toll on the body. Milestones like pregnancy, significant weight loss, and natural aging can be the cause of unwanted stretch marks, separated abdominal muscles, abdominal wall laxity, loose skin, and other issues that can mentally and physically affect a person. Although diet and exercise are great for getting back into shape, they’re not always enough to completely fix these issues. Fortunately, a plastic surgery procedure called a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) provides a way to restore a youthful, tight, and contoured midsection.

Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Keyian Z. Paydar of Paydar Plastic Surgery has been providing patients with a renewed sense of self-confidence through the art and skill of plastic surgery for many years at his Newport Beach-based plastic surgery practice. Patients from all around  frequently seek out Dr. Paydar because of his skill, expertise, patient-centered approach, and artistry.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

The abdomen is possibly the most challenging area of the body to target when it comes to shaping and toning. It gets even more difficult when factors like childbirth and age come into play. The abdomen is notorious for holding excess fat that is stubborn and resistant to even the strictest diet and exercise plans. Then, when the diet and exercise regimen does work, there is often excess, sagging skin left over that is nearly impossible to get rid of.

As one of the best tummy tuck surgeons in Newport Beach, Dr. Paydar is entirely sympathetic towards this, which is why he designs each tummy tuck he performs to target and improve the appearance of the midsection and bring out the highest definition. Tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and fat while also tightening the abdominal muscles. It is essential to keep in mind that a tummy tuck procedure is not meant to help you lose weight but rather used to improve the function and appearance of the midsection.

What are the Benefits of Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Have you ever chosen not to wear an item of clothing you love because of how your abdomen might look if you did? Or perhaps you only shop for clothes that don’t fit you correctly because you’re trying to hide your belly. A tummy tuck can offer you a great sense of self-confidence by allowing you to wear your favorite dress, jeans, or shirt with pride.

Having excess skin and fat in the midsection may keep you from having the slender silhouette you want. With a tummy tuck, your waistline can be contoured and shaped to have a slimmer or refined waistline. Tummy tuck surgery focuses entirely on the midsection. You’ll notice a flatter abdomen and body contours.

The majority of tummy tuck patients have weakened abdominal muscles, especially women following childbirth. After stretching to carry excess weight or a baby, the abdominal muscles are left very thin, weak, and often separated, which can be especially painful for the back and stomach. Dr. Paydar repairs the muscles by suturing them together again. These sutures allow the abdominal wall to strengthen, resulting in a tighter core and midsection and relieved back pain.

How Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed?

Dr. Paydar conducts all of his tummy tuck procedures in his AAAASF accredited state of the art facility, Newport Aesthetic Surgery Center, under general anesthesia using a board certified anesthesiologist. He begins by making an incision from one hip bone to the other across the lower abdomen. Through this incision, Dr. Paydar will lift the skin and fat removing any excess or sagging skin that may be there. Underneath the skin and fat are the muscle layers of the abdomen, which he will suture together and tighten. The skin is then draped back over the abdomen, and any excess skin or fat is trimmed away.  The pubic and anterior thigh skin indirectly improve in their appearances by the abdominal skin excess removal.  The belly button stalk will remain in its current position and be delivered out through a new spot on the pulled down skin.

Can A Tummy Tuck Be Combined with Other Procedures?

Pregnancy, significant weight loss, and age can all cause changes to a woman’s overall physique, especially the breasts. Following childbirth and weight loss, women experience a significant loss in the volume and shape of their breasts, which can be corrected with breast augmentation or breast lift surgery. Mommy makeover surgery with Dr. Paydar is an ideal solution for mothers who want to remove unwanted signs of childbearing with an overall body transformation procedure. Mommy makeovers often include tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, and more into one treatment plan to help women revive their self-confidence, sexuality, and sense of self.

Newport Beach Tummy Tuck FAqs

Great contour (achieved by tightening the lax muscles mainly), smoother skin (by removing excess skin and fat from lower abdomen), and a cute navel or belly button with a nice hood.

Its best to educate yourself online or talk to friends who had a tummy tuck before. Make sure you are done having children and are in good health and at a stable goal weight as well. Write down any questions you may have about the operation and bring the list with you.

After you fill out your health history forms, we will perform the consultation with my patient coordinator and go over your health history to make sure you are a good candidate for the operation. We will perform a quick medical examination focusing mainly on the abdominal issues at hand. We will present you with a price quote at the end of the consultation.

Your widened six-pack will be brought together nicely to create narrower core muscles. The function will be the same if not better.

From the standpoint of the operation, the weight loss depends on the size of the pannus or extra skin and fat hanging or folded in the lower abdominal region. After having a tummy tuck operation, you will notice that your core is stronger and the support to your back is much improved and loss of excess skin can assist you in having better workouts and achieving your goal weight.

I often use liposuction to help define the lateral border of the trunk at the same time I do my tummy tuck. It accentuates the curves and the hourglass figure. Other sculpting operations can be done as well but safety is our main concern and there are limitations to how much more can be done.

Recovery lasts about 2 weeks, but restrictions to avoid core activity or heavy lifting can last 6 yo 8 weeks in order to allow the sutured muscles to heal.

I encourage my patients to get up and walk as much as they can handle from the beginning. Laying in bed can cause complications. I gradually allow an increase in the activity and exercise level for my patients weekly to no restrictions by 8 weeks post operation.

Anywhere between 3 to 4 hours and if liposuction is needed for more contouring, it can add another hour to the operation.

Look for a Board Certified Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon who has performed many of these cosmetic operations with abundant excellent before and after photos addressing the abdominal wall laxity, excess skin and fat, and a pleasing navel shape.

Yes.  But with excess stretch to the abdominal wall the results may change and require a revision abdominoplasty.

Yes. But the stretch from pregnancy can ruin the results and require a revision operation.

As long as the weight is less than 20 pounds using both arms or 10 pounds for each arm it is allowed a week or two after surgery as long as you are able to stand up straight and have a good balance. If your toddler is much heavier then its best to wait until the 8 week mark.

Yes. The muscles are usually stretched along with its covering tissue the fascia after pregnancy or weight loss. Its important to repair or plicate the muscles together. Some patients have muscle separation, or diastasis recti, and some have hernias that need tightening as well.

As mentioned in the previous question, the belly button will be disconnected at the skin level and once the skin is pulled down and the excess skin is removed, the belly button stalk will be delivered in the new skin hovering over it via a small round incision.

Your belly button will stay where it is but the skin surrounding it will be disconnected and pulled down. The belly button will then be delivered through a new incision over a much smoother and toned skin.

I place two drains that are delivered in the pubic area. The drains last anywhere from 7-14 days before they are removed in the office.

Only sutures that need to be removed are those holding the drains in place for 7 to 14 days.

There will be generalized swelling the first 2 to 3 days but gradually over a few weeks to a couple months this will shift to the lowest gravity location or the suprapubic region.  By three months this should all be gone.

There is a good amount of discomfort from sutures in the abdominal muscles. This is why I like to use a long lasting pain medication (EXPAREL) injected directly in the abdominal muscles where the nerves enter to improve this discomfort. Patients are able to walk and stand up without much difficulty after.

Its always a good idea to be cautious, but not to the level of not moving around or staying in bed with the fear of ruining your results. Body is forgiving and allowing pain to guide your activities is a good rule to follow.

Fluid collection or seroma is a common complication that may require drainage with a needle in the office. This is the reason why I like to leave drains over the surgical surface for a week or two.
