What Is a Breast Revision?

One of the most requested and straightforward forms of breast revision surgery is the breast implant exchange, which replaces the original implants with a new set. The decision to replace your initial breast implants could be due to hardening of the capsule around the implant, also known as a capsular contracture, implant rupture or implant deflation. Patients also choose this procedure because they want to select different implant materials or sizes due to a change in their desire about their body shape. In cases of implant rupture, you should consider revision as soon as possible to allow for a more comfortable procedure and recovery.

What Is Breast Implant Removal?

Although very rare, some patients do decide after years of having their breast implants to part ways with them for good. Breast implant removal surgery is performed on patients who have decided that implants no longer fit their lifestyle, health concerns, or because they simply want an aesthetic change. While you may experience some skin laxity or ptosis after a breast implant removal procedure, if you choose, you can include an immediate breast lift with your implant removal or later to remedy this situation. If you decide that you want your implants again, you can always have them replaced

Common Reasons to Have a Breast Revision

The most common complications that can arise with implants involves the scar tissue that forms around implants. This scar tissue is known as a capsule. When the scar tissue thickens and tightens around the implant, it can cause distortion and pain in the breast.

A capsulectomy is performed to remove the capsule of scar tissue and exchange the implant. Other complications with scar tissue can result in the implant falling to the side or bottoming out.

A capsulotomy is performed to allow for increased movement of the breast implant.

A breast capsulorrhaphy is performed to allow less movement of the implants and to improve implant malposition.

Modern breast implants are highly durable and long-lasting, making leaks and ruptures infrequent. However, they can happen. Older breast implants are more susceptible to experiencing these issues. When a saline breast implant leaks, your body can absorb the liquid without concern, but the breast will look deflated and require revision surgery much sooner.

Occasionally, breast implants will ripple or wrinkle, which can become visible through the breast tissue. The issue is typically more prevalent in thin patients with low natural breast tissue and is more noticeable with saline breast implants.

Life comes with many unforeseen changes, and so can bodily ideals. Some women desire a change in their breast size. You can accomplish this by having your implants replaced with larger or smaller implant sizes. Also, breasts continue to age after a breast augmentation, just like the rest of the body. This can lead to the development of sagging breasts, especially in patients who have been through pregnancy or significant weight changes with their implants. Adding a breast lift to your revision can restore your breast shape and position and give your breasts a more youthful appearance.

Common Reasons to Have a Breast Implant Removal

Breast implants will remain in your breasts until you choose to have them removed. After breast augmentation, some women may be dissatisfied with their results or later decide in life that they no longer want breast implants. Some women must make the choice to remove their implants due to health concerns. Regardless of your reasons for seeking breast implant removal, only a qualified plastic surgeon can remove your breast implants and restore the natural shape, size, and positioning of your breasts.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Revision or Breast Implant Removal?

Dr. Paydar does recommend that Orange County breast revision candidates should:

  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol around 4 to 6 weeks before their surgery
  • Exercise a healthy lifestyle
  • Prepare and understand the details of the procedure including any and all risks
  • Have realistic expectations and be honest about these expectations during consultations
  • Follow all of Dr. Paydar’s before and after surgery instructions

The best candidates for breast revision or breast implant removal surgery:

  • Women in good mental and physical health
  • Want to improve the appearance of their breasts
  • Are experiencing pain or discomfort
  • Have experienced a leak or rupture of their breast implants
  • Are in need of replacements

What To Expect from Your Recovery?

Following your surgery, you will be wrapped in bandages and compression garments similar to those after your initial augmentation procedure. The duration of your recovery will depend on the extent of your surgery. During your consultation, you and Dr. Paydar will discuss what to expect in your recovery.

While all patients heal at their own pace, you should expect to take at least a week off of work to recover. Any pain or discomfort can be remedied with Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or a pain medication provided to you by Dr. Paydar. To keep yourself comfortable and healing, try not to be too active for the first few weeks, as too much activity can cause inflammation, pain, and prolonged recovery time.
