Gynecomastia

What is a Gynecomastia?

A common condition among men of all ages is Gynecomastia, or enlarged and overdeveloped breasts. Every male has some amount of breast tissue in their body, but for males who have excess tissue that is bothersome to their confidence and body-appeal, a Breast Reduction procedure is available to help them achieve a natural and attractive chest contour. Liposuction and surgical tissue removal techniques may be used to remove excess tissue from over developed areas of the breast regions on a the patient’s chest.

Who is a Gynecomastia Candidate?

Good candidates for this procedure are males of any age who have overdeveloped breast tissue. It is important that potential patients have an otherwise healthy body weight for their height and build. Overall physical and mental health are important as well for potential patients who are considering this procedure. Gynecomastia Surgery Pre-Op and Post-Op

How do I prepare for my Gynecomastia?

Your surgeon needs to identify the cause(s) of male breast overgrowth. If no cause is identified, your surgeon will give you specific instruction on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins, and medications. If you smoke, plan to quit at least four weeks be­fore your surgery and not to resume for at least six weeks after your surgery. Your surgery is done on an outpatient basis and can take 2-4 hours, so you should arrange for someone to drive you home and assist with your care for a day or two after you leave the hospital, if needed.

What happens during a Gynecomastia?

Once your desired results have been determined, Dr Paydar will use either liposuction or excision techniques – or both. This will effectively remove excess fat and glandular tissue from the nipple area of the chest. Incisions may be made near the nipple, or in the armpit. Upon completion of the surgery, all incisions will be properly sutured and dressed for a proper recovery.

What is the Gynecomastia Recovery Process?

It is common to experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort after your surgery. Depending on your situation, a compression garment may be given to you to help alleviate unnecessary stress to treated areas during recovery. The swelling you experience should continually lessen and eventually completely subside after three weeks. You should be able to return to work about this same time as well. Excessive stress and movement, such as exercise, should be avoided till about six weeks after your surgery.

What are the Risks of a Gynecomastia?

Post-operative complications such as infection and blood clots are rare, but can occur. Poor healing, which results in conspicuous scars, may necessitate a second operation. Smokers should be advised to stop, as smoking may increase the risk of complications and delay healing. If liposuction is used, scars will be small but can have increased pigmentation. Nipple sensation changes could occur. You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your surgeon’s instructions before and after the surgery, especially with regard to when and how you should resume physical activity.
